Rita's Voiceover: Previously on Silk Stalkings (Clips from Part one)
Scene 1: Right outside Rita's room
Chris: (on phone) I can't believe it either Cap. But the doctor says amnesia
is not uncommon in these cases. He's not sure if it's
permanent...Look Cap, I've got to go back in there. I'll call you
when I know more.
(Chris returns to the room. Doctor is still examining her. Chris remains quiet
in the corner.)
Doctor: Do you know your name?
Rita: (struggling) No! I can't remember. Why can't I remember?
Doctor: You had a bubble in your brain and two days ago it exploded. Now it
did some damage to your brain, particularly the frontal lobe which
controls long term memory.
Rita: How long will it last?
Doctor: It's impossible to say.
Rita: You mean this might be permanent?
Doctor: It's possible.
Rita: (overwhelmed) Oh.
Doctor: I do have some good news for you. There is no paralysis or other
brain damage. It could have been a lot worse.
Rita: Sorry doctor, but I am having a hard time finding myself lucky right
now.
Doctor: Of course.
Rita: So, what happens now? I mean, I don't know anything about myself...
Doctor: Your name is Rita Lee Lance. You are a sergeant in the homicide
department of the Palm Beach Police Department.
Rita: (surprised) I'm a cop?
Doctor: Yes. But that's all I know. You'll have to ask (motions to Chris)this
man. (Rita has anxious look on her face.) You'll be safe with him.
He's the one who brought you in and he's been by your side the whole
time.
(Doctor and nurses all leave. Chris approaches bed with hesitation. Rita looks
at him inquisitively.)
Rita: Are you ....my husband?
Chris: Oh, no. I'm your partner.
Rita: Oh. Well thank you for staying with me.
Chris: Of course.
Rita: Are we friends?
Chris: Yeah, the best of friends.
Rita: Oh. (upset) God this is weird.
Chris: I'm so sorry. ( He goes to hold her hand but thinks better of it.)
What can I do?
Rita: I don't know. I don't even know where to start....I want to know
about her....I mean...I don't know what I mean. What kind of a person
am I?
Chris: I can do that. I knew...I know Rita better than I know myself.
Rita: Were we...Chris: No. We weren't involved. But we were very important in each other's lives.
Rita: What about family?
Chris: Your parents are dead. I tried to locate your foster brother Michael
but he's out of the country for the whole month. Uh, you didn't talk
to him much.
(Rita grimaces in pain.)
Chris: Are you OK?
Rita: My head is throbbing.
Chris: Let me get a nurse.
Rita: Wait! I don't even know you're name.
Chris: Chris. Chris Lorenzo.
Rita: It's nice to meet you Chris Lorenzo.
(Chris smiles sadly. He leaves the room to get the nurse.)
(OK, Rita gets some meds and goes to sleep. Chris takes this time to go home,
shower, and get some sleep. The hospital is under orders to call him when she
wakes up.)
Scene 2: Rita's room
(It is the next day. Rita has been moved out of ICU and has a private room.
Chris arrives to find Rita awake. She is staring out the window. Chris enters
quietly.)
Chris: Good morning.
Rita: (lets out small gasp) Oh, I didn't hear you come in.
Chris: I didn't mean to startle you.
Rita: It's OK.
Chris: Uh, how are you feeling?
Rita: Better. Thanks to all the drugs they have me on.
Chris: The wonders of modern science.
Rita: I guess so. At least it let me sleep. I don't think I would have been
able to otherwise.
Chris: You're looking better.
Rita: I looked in the mirror this morning. You can't believe how weird it
is to not recognize the face staring back at you.
Chris: (after a moment of silence) I brought a picture. It's one you gave to
me. You were five years old here. I liked this one because your smile
is so wide and you have such big dimples. I keep this picture on my
night table.
Rita: Did I know you back then?
Chris: No, we met much later.
Rita: I wish I could learn about my childhood.
Chris: You told me a lot about it. I can give it a shot.
(OK, Chris goes on and on about her childhood. He fills in most of the blanks,
able to remember many of the specifics of Rita's stories. This goes on for
several hours. Finally Rita says that she's tired. Chris gets up to go.)
Rita: Thank you Chris. I had no idea you knew so much about my childhood.
Chris: Like I said, we talked about it a lot.
Rita: You have a good memory.
Chris: For the important things.
Scene 3: Rita's apartment
(It is the next day. Rita has been released from the hospital. I know, she had
major brain surgery and she's out within the week. Let's just say she's a quick
healer. Chris is taking her home.)
Chris: (opening door) Home sweet home.Rita: I have fish.
Chris: Yeah, Alfred and ...... ( I don't know the other's name.) Technically
that's Alfred II, the first one had a date with the toilet....
Rita: Any other pets?
Chris: No. You had been talking about getting a dog. But work hours were too
long...
Rita: Was I good?
Chris: Excuse me?
Rita: Was I a good cop?
Chris: Second only to me. (smiles) Yeah, you were a great cop.
Rita: I'm tired. I think I'm going to try to go to sleep.
Chris: Is there anything else I can do for you?
Rita: No, I'll be fine.
Chris: My phone number is...actually it's on your speed dial. Memory 1. If
you need anything just call.
Rita: Thanks Chris. I think I just need sleep now.
Chris: OK, goodbye.
Scene 4: Rita's apartment
(It is the next morning. Rita answers the door to Chris.)
Rita: Chris, thanks for coming.
Chris: I got your message. Is everything all right? Is your head OK?
Rita: Yeah, it's fine.
Chris: Good. You know, I thought, if you were feeling okay, I would take you
to the house you used to live in. Maybe it would stir something up...
Rita: Chris, I'm leaving.
Chris: What? No, you can't leave.
Rita: I just....I can't do this. I tried, I really did. But it's not
working. I couldn't sleep at all last night. I tried walking around
this place, thinking I would remember something. But all I did felt
was out of place. I mean I stared at these pictures upstairs and I
didn't even know who the people were. And even the ones with you, I
couldn't remember where they were taken. None of the stuff here is
mine. It's hers....I'm a stranger here...in this place...in this
body. And as much as I would love to be her, I just can't. And no
matter how many times I try to rack my brain, nothing's going to come
of it.
Chris: The doctor said you might get your memory back any day now.
Rita: Or I may never get it back. Look, I can't sit around here waiting for
something that might never happen. I can't lead a life like that. I
need to start over. Away from her life..her friends...I have to
leave.
(Chris stares at her speechless.)
