IT'S OUR DESTINY
by TKZ
This is my first fanfic. I really liked the scene in "The Last Kiss Goodnight" where Chris and Rita's souls are talking, right before Chris flatlined. And it got me to thinking...

(Voices echoeing throughout)
"Hey Sam, it's me!"
"Chris!" Rita bursting with the pure joy at the sight of her beloved husband. "But how?"
"Shh, Just kiss me woman!"
Rita kisses him more passionatly than ever before. She could remain like this forever. Feel him...WAIT!! She pulls away and steps back to gaze up at him again. Yep, it was her Chris' piercing blue eyes and his glorious Lorenzo smile, the smile that always sent chills up and down her spine.
"Sam--You're DEAD--what's going on?"
"You ask too many questions, you a cop?" he smirks. "Rita we don't have much time."
"Where are we?"
"Don't you know?"
For the first time Rita stops looking at Chris and looks around. Chris and Rita are surrounded by an insatiable white light. She looks down at herself and realizes that she is in the dress she wore on their wedding day and Chris is wearing his white suit from that day. The two of them are completely alone except for the bright light. "Chris come on, I don't get it."
"It's heaven Sammy!" Chris exclaims grinning ear to ear.
"Heaven?" "So this is heaven, hmm," she says with a playful gleam in her eyes.
"Well not exactly. This is just where we let the visitors meet with us. You don't get to view the rest, yet! You still have your life to live. Your life with little CJ." Chris take his wife's hand and they begin to dance.
"You know about CJ? You know you have a son!" says a bewildered Rita.
"Of course silly. I see everything. Sam you've got to get on with your life. I know you miss me, us,...I miss you too," he whispers tenderly and they kiss.
Rita breaks their kiss, "This is so unfair Chris. I wanted us to spend the rest of our lives together. Be your wife, your lover, a mother and grow old and gray with you. We didn't even get a month together! We just got married and then everything was taken away! You never even got to spend time with our baby." Rita begins to sob.
"Don't cry Sam," Chris wipes a tear from her cheek, "I know we had plans, but Rita there was no other way, it was our destiny."
"It was a rotten destiny then," Rita angrily yells, "It's so unfair, we had gotten so close-FINALLY TOGETHER, I feel so alone now!"
"But Rita it was our destiny," Chris gently tries to explain.
"Our destiny, to be apart-- separated, that's a terrible destiny Sam!"
"But we're not apart Sammy. Our hearts are one, they always have been. Not a day passes that we don't think of each other and remember. Rita, honey, nothing can take that away. Rita we will be together forever--eternity. Yes, physically we're apart, but it won't always be that way. And spiritually, emotionally we are always together."
"What do you mean, you're dead, that's not gonna change. I want you to hold me again, make love to me, laugh at my jokes and comfort me, even if it's just one more time."
"Sammy I still laugh at your jokes." Chris hugs his Rita and then cradles her in his arms. Her head fits perfectly under his chin. "Rita one day you will be able to join me up here and CJ too. Eventually we will get to be a family. But until then you need to get on with your life. CJ need his mother and some lucky guy out there would love to spend his life with you."
Rita turns to look at him, "Chris are you crazy! I don't want some other guy."
"And I don't want some other woman. Look Sammy I know no one else can compare, well maybe he smirks, but that doesn't mean you should live like a hermit. Come on--you've got so much to look forward to. CJ's going to grow up, get married, and have our grandchildren. You should share that with someone!" Chris and Rita's eyes lock.
Rita looks away, "Chris I don't know how."
"Shh. We've talked enough and we're running out of time."
"Huh?"
"Sammy it's the middle of the night. Your alarms's going to sound at 7 a.m.--do you want to spend it talking or...."
Chris didn't have to say anymore. Rita pressed her fingers to his lips and then kissed him, the way she had the night after the explosion. Her Sam walked her over to a bed, that she hadn't noticed before, as they undressed each other.
"Rita," he grinned, "this heaven thing's pretty cool. I think of something and it just appears."
"You've got a dirty mind Sam."
"Heaven can't take that away Sammy!"
They made love all night. About 6:45, they laid in each others arms cuddling. Chris gazed deep into Rita's green eyes. "Sammy, I love you, heart and soul I love you."
"I know, I love you too," as she stared back into his deep blue eyes.
"Sam, now you remember what I said. You've got to move on, NO BUTS. You've got years ahead of you before you can come join me."
"But, Christopher, what are you going to be doing until then."
"Don't say Christopher like that," Chris smirked.
"Sam?"
"What?" "Rita come on, okay I'm going to continue helping God sift through the good dead people and the bad dead people, He's about as demanding as Lipschitz you know. And it's much safer now since I'm already dead. And I'm going to coach basketball to the angels, and flirt with the ladies and think of you every minute--no every second!" Chris replied full of love for his Rita.
"I'll think of you too Chris, every second."
"You see Sam. We are together-together forever. I feel good-you feel good. Death can't separate us. Now you've got my son to raise. And he is a handsome devil isn't he!" Chris proudly smiles his cocky Lorenzo smile.
Rita rolls her eyes, "You're hopeless."
"I know."
"Goodbye Sammy-SEE YA!"
"Goodbye Chris, I love you so much!"
"Ditto."
"That's not funny!" Rita giggles.
"I thought it was pretty good."
Their lips met one last time --until time would reunite them again--someday.

Rita's alarm was buzzing. She reached over to turn it off immediately. A bright, glorious Rita Lee Lance smile spread across her face. For the first time since Chris' demise she looked forward to the new day--and tomorrow and tomorrow!
(The echo of "Goodmorning Sunshine!" hovered over the room.)
